Haldi Tradition
The Haldi ceremony is a significant pre-wedding ritual in East Indian weddings. It involves applying a paste made from turmeric, sandalwood, and other ingredients to the bride and groom’s skin. This ceremony is usually held separately at the respective homes of the bride and groom on the morning of the wedding day or a day before. The turmeric paste is believed to bless the couple with glowing skin and protect them from evil spirits. Family members and close friends partake in the joyful event, applying the paste amidst songs, laughter, and well-wishes. The Haldi ceremony not only purifies and beautifies but also symbolizes the start of a new journey for the couple.

Typically held the night before the wedding, Jaggo literally means ‘wake up’ and symbolizes the joyous announcement of the upcoming marriage. During the ceremony, family members carry decorated copper or brass vessels filled with candles or oil lamps on their heads, dancing and singing traditional songs. The procession moves through the neighborhood, inviting everyone to join in the celebration. The Jaggo tradition is marked by energetic dancing, loud music, and a festive atmosphere, fostering a sense of community and shared happiness as the families prepare for the wedding day.
Also , part of this ceremony is the Chajj or Khunda, a traditional sieve or a winnower, beautifully decorated with bright colors and flowers. As the celebration progresses, the Chajj is playfully struck with a stick until it falls apart. This act symbolizes the joyous breaking of old ties and the enthusiastic embrace of new beginnings for the bride and groom.
